Welcome back to the Lincoln Project. I'm your host, Reed Gailan. Today, I'm joined by Michigan's

0:13.7

Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson, who's been in office since 2019. The first Democrat to do so since

0:19.4

1995. Prior to that, Secretary Benson was dean of Wayne State University Law School,

0:25.1

co-founder of Military Spaces of Michigan, and his author of the book, State Secretaries of State,

0:30.5

Guardians of the Democratic Process. Secretary Benson, thanks for joining me today.

0:34.6

Thanks for having me, great to be here. So Secretary Benson, today we're going to talk about the

0:39.6

issue of voting rights and the barrage of threats against those rights in the state of Michigan,

0:44.4

1:19.5

future. Now, obviously, Secretary Benson, you and I spoke a fair bit last year during 2020,

1:25.2

and this is what our mission, Lincoln Projects mission and the Pro Democracy Coalition is all about.

1:30.7

So is someone who is not only an elected official, but also someone who has stood for office as a

1:37.0

politician, when you saw January 6th in that moment, and now you have, you've seen things progress,

1:43.2

what did that moment open up for you and tell us a little bit more about your belief and accountability,

1:48.7

which certainly we share as well? I think the entire post-election era in that 60, 70 days,

1:55.6

in between when the polls closed, and we got to January, including in January 6th, was rife with

2:01.9

daily multifaceted, multi-tiered attempts to, is that also recently referred to, use every
