No prizes for guessing where we begin our conversations,

indeed our contemplations today.

It is, as you know, the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp

at Auschwitz, Soviet troops, of course, that marched in to find only 7,000 people left after an estimated 1 million had died there, the massive majority, some 90% of whom were Jewish.

So much to cover.

The most senior British politician attending the ceremonies today is the Mayor of London

Sadiq Khan and he joins me live on the line from Auschwitz Berkern now.

Sadiq Khan, what happens there today and why have you decided to go?

Well, firstly, I've been here before but for those of your listeners who haven't, it's

hard to explain.

I'm currently speaking to you from Auschwitz Berkenau.

This is a factory that was designed and built with the sole purpose of exterminating

mainly Jewish people, as you said, more than 1.1 million people perished to men, women and children, mainly Jewish people.

And as I look around me, it literally is like any other factor you can imagine with a big difference, there are chimneys,

and it was designed to kill and did kill many, many people.

And the reason why I'm here today is, today is the 75th anniversary

when this extermination camp was liberated.

There are two Londoners who were here with me, Holocaust survivors.

One of them, Reney actually was in Auschwitz.

Hannah, who Rachel spoke to in your earlier clip, was in another camp.
