And you're listening to The Important Cinema Club.

And today, we're talking about Mondo movies.

What are Mondo movies, Will?

Mondo movies are shockumentaries featuring strange rituals from around the world. I mean, look. It's not just your everyday thing, is it? Let's face it, what do you go to Mondo movies for? You want to see people die. You want to see people die. You want to see animals die. So this was a topic that I proposed that Justin was not thrilled about, but I'm going to, I'm going to say why I proposed it, which is because I'm a sadist.

I like to watch things die.

That's right.

I first learned about Mondo movies in a book called Slezoid Express.

Oh, a great book.

Terrific book about New York Grind House Cinema by Bill Landis and Michelle Clifford.

And it had a whole chapter on Mondo movies, a genre that

sort of started in earnest in 1962 with a movie called Mondo Kane, although it's kind of a long

lineage of movies. Yeah. People would go around with a film like Mom and Dad, which was

advertised as...

A sex education or sex hygiene film.

And the only reason they were showing is that you could see someone give birth on screen.

And that was the only legal way that you could show nudity at some time.
