And this is the fifth of our six-part series on Chernobyl.

Last time we were looking at some of the efforts to contain the disaster, the battle for Chernobyl, David, as you said.

And today we'll tell about the next stage in that battle, the so-called

bio-robots who were sent to deal with the decontamination of the reactor itself.

That's right. Last time we talked about the wider liquidation effort, the thousands and

thousands of Russian conscripts who were sent into the exclusion zone to try to decontaminate this 30-kilometer

area. But the plant itself was still leaking radioactive material. It had already spread

its poison all over the European continent. It had already forced the Soviet Union to admit that

there had been a disaster. It had led to contamination in Poland, in Germany, in

Scandinavia and in Britain. The building itself needed to be contained to prevent the leak

of further radioactivity, but that could not be done because of this unbelievable, I'm just

astonishing, appalling levels of gamma radiation emanating from the wreckage of the building, because parts of the

reactor, nuclear fuel, but also highly contaminated graphite blocks, had been scattered all over
