And we have to remember that in terms of our standing before God, we are as unclean as this

Samaritan woman was.

As you go through John, you got to love that John selectively picks events in the life of Jesus that we might not pay any attention to. And if we were doing the collection of what we'd

write about of Jesus, we may not write about this, but they're meant to shock us and cause

us to rethink who Jesus is. Let me read from John 4.

It's a long passage, John 1 through 45, but I'm just going to read a series of verses.

Now, he had to go through Samaria, that's Jesus.

So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychard, near the plot ground of Jacob,

that Jacob had given his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there,

and Jesus tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samarite woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, will you give me a drink?

His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman.

How can you ask me for a drink?

For Jews did not associate with Samaritan.

Jesus answered here,

If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asked you for a drink,

you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.
