Summary
Thermodynamics and nutrition have one major thing in common: they both involve energy.
Thermodynamics is generally talked about with heat, efficiency, or the transfer of energy
Nutrition is always about calories.. And it is often questioned whether a calorie is always a calorie.
1st law of thermodynamics = energy is conserved
2nd law of thermodynamics = energy transfer is not 100% efficient, often some is lost as heat
A great example of thermodynamics applied to nutrition is macronutrients. We know that different macronutrients have different thermic effects. For example, protein has a much higher thermogenic effect than fat - about 20% compared to 0%. So not all calories are the same.
Next, we have to think about what thermodynamics generally refers to and that’s closed systems. A closed system always contains the same matter. There can be no mass transfers across the boundary. There may be energy transfer across the boundary. So, is the human body a closed system? Nope. We eat, digest, and pass food/water through our systems. Food is matter.
Now, where some people disagree is whether the ketogenic diet can offer some type of metabolic advantage over traditional diets. —-

| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the tailored life podcast, the one and only fitness and nutrition podcast. It goes way beyond just training and nutrition. I'm your host, Cody McBroom, and today with me is our co-host and CSO of tailored coaching method, and that is Dr. Brandon Roberts. |
| 0:22.6 | We're diving into a research review today. |
| 0:24.6 | This one's going to be cool. |
| 0:26.2 | I think this is going to be very applicable for you guys. |
| 0:30.6 | There's a lot of people listen to this that are actively participating or working on a diet and a fitness journey, trying to lose weight, so on and so forth. |
| 0:33.4 | This is breaking down some of the fundamental things that you need to know. |
| 0:36.6 | So this might be a really |
| 0:37.5 | informative and educative podcast for you. If you just kind of need to better understand why |
| 0:42.2 | calories and nutrition and weight loss, like how all that works and what's really going on here |
| 0:47.7 | and what, I guess, like, I'm just going to give away the thermodynamics, right? The law of |
| 0:51.6 | thermodynamics. It's pretty important. It's a scientific |
| 0:54.9 | principle. You can't really get around it. And we're going to talk about that today. So the |
| 0:58.2 | question that Brandon is going to be answering and using the research to do so with is how does |
| 1:02.2 | thermodynamics apply to nutrition? Go ahead. Yeah, yeah. So this was a really hot topic. I mean, it still is, but it was really popular, probably like five or seven years ago. And it evolves around the idea that a calorie is a calorie and it's calories in and universe calories out. You hear it all the time, SICO. And then the kind of comeback for anyone who says, no, that's not true, is, well, you can't get |
| 1:31.8 | around the laws of thermodynamics. And you're right, you can't. So I just kind of wanted to break |
| 1:37.5 | down a couple examples how thermodynamics applies to nutrition and just get some basics down. |
| 1:44.0 | So the first, there are four laws of thermodynamics. |
| 1:48.1 | There's a zeroth law and there's a third law, which we're not going to talk about. |
| 1:51.6 | But the first law is energy is conserved, right? |
| 1:56.0 | So that means that for us, when we eat food, we are breaking down the bonds and the food, |
| 2:03.7 | we're harvesting those phosphate groups, the macronutrients all to have a slightly different |
| 2:07.8 | pathway, but we're harvesting energy from food. |
