Summary

This is a fun one! We asked you guys to send in questions on our social media accounts, and y'all delivered! In this episode, we are running through a long list of listener questions. Many of the questions have to do with early-season hunting and scrapes, while others focus on terrain features and more! In a food-rich environment, how do you narrow down the feed trees to hunt? How do you find bucks in October when they aren’t laying down much sign? How do you find deer sign in Piney Woods with little to no terrain features? Underrated tips for hunting public ground? Hunting funnels vs. hunting sign in the mountains — pros and cons? Early season — would you prioritize bedding areas, feed trees, or trails between the two? August 15th and it’s hot — kudzu patch in a creek bottom or just off an ag field’s edge? Found a buck coming to ag. Move in and scout the bedding or set up on the edge of the ag in September? Where do y’all usually find early season scrapes in pine/SMZ terrain for buck inventory? Do y’all have any examples of Piney Woods rut funnels? Have you seen more success scouting into an area and setting up on best sign, or scouting and then coming back later? What are the top three browse species deer prefer in the South? I’m a Florida hunter. I can find bucks but have trouble killing them with 4–6 day quota hunts. Any tips? What are some good terrain features or areas to find community scrapes in steep hill country? Where do you make mock scrapes and how do you make them? Straight wall cartridge or muzzleloader during alternate gun season? If straight wall, what is preferred? What’s the dream hunt for you guys? If you could only go on one more hunt, what would the hunt be and where? What are y’all’s rifle setups? How do you deal with the difficulty of leaving your kids/family to go on a hunting trip? You know, cell cameras are super popular these days. I use them. Jacob uses them. I know a lot of you guys use them as well.

Let me tell you something that will save you a little bit of a headache when it comes to cell cameras. That is the cell coverage layer from Onex Hunt. You can turn that layer on and view how the cell coverage is on any property or even certain parts of properties. Now that's helpful for cell cameras because I might be going to an area where I want to put a camera out and I can just before I leave, go ahead and look at the map, see if I've got good enough cell coverage in there. If it's got cell coverage, okay, I'll bring a cell camera. If it doesn't, all right, bring it a normal camera. I know I've been burned a bunch of times bringing a dagum cell camera somewhere and then getting there and then not having any service that's frustrating well this layer from onex hunt remedies that also it's just useful for

planning trips in general you know knowing whether or not you're going to have cell coverage to

call family in case something goes wrong and then of course also if you see that there's no cell

coverage in an area you know you need to go ahead and download that map for offline use on OnX. If you want to check out that layer and a whole bunch of others from OnX Hunt, go get you an elite membership and use the promo code Southern at checkout. It's going to get you a 20% discount, and it's going to help us out here at the Southern Outdoorsman podcast. So you'll go check it out. Stay safe this season and know where you stand with OnX hunt. I've been using the Vortex Fury range finding binocular this season and I've been really loving them. It eliminates the need for a rangefinder for me and it's really useful when you're hunting, let's say a big cutover where there could be a deer anywhere out there. And when you get eyes on it with the binoculars, it's really nice to not have to switch over to a range finder and relocate that deer and that sea of sagegrass with a rangefinder. I can just range them real quick in my binos, get the rifle up, and I'm good to go. This is going to take the guesswork out of your rifle setup. When that buck steps out, you're going to be able to see exactly how big he is and how far he is with one device at the same time. Simplifies everything.

They got a little something for everybody, whether you're a saddle guy or if you hunt out of a climber. Of course, Latitude makes some of our favorite saddles and climbing sticks, but they also make some great packs and backpack straps that you can attach to the bottom of a climbing tree stand to make it more comfortable to carry in the woods. Probably my favorite piece of gear I've gotten in the last several years is the Ranger 22 from latitude. It's like a do-it-all backpack for me. It's compact which I like, but it's adjustable enough that it gets me through the whole season. It's the only pack I use. I use it in early bow season when I'm not carrying much in the woods, woods all the way to late January rut hunts in the deep south when it's cold and I'm carrying all kinds of clothes and all kinds of stuff on my back. The Ranger 22 is adjustable enough that I can just use that one backpack all season. And hey, all you Mossie Oak Bottomland fan, they just released the Ranger 22 in Mossy Oak Bottomland. So like I said,
