Summary

One of the most basic human needs is to be understood. When we are misunderstood, we feel alone, unvalued, and betrayed.  None of us wishes to feel this way, and no one wants to make others feel this way. So why is there so much misunderstanding in our relationships? Join me for an important discussion on how to improve every relationship, personal and professional, through deep communication and emphatic listening.  Join my weekly newsletter at GregMcKeown.com/1mw  Learn more about my books and courses at GregMcKeown.com What's Essential Podcast Twitter Facebook Greg McKeown Twitter LinkedIn Instagram Scratch Audiohouse Instagram LinkedIn Credits: Hosted by Greg McKeown Produced by Greg McKeown and Scratch Audiohouse Executive Produced by Greg McKeown, Brent Montgomery, and Ed Simpson Co-Produced by Paul Dizon and Derrial Christon

The ladies and gentlemen welcome to the What's Essential Podcast. I'm Greg Bacchewin

0:09.5

and I'll be your host. I'm also the author of the New York Times bestselling books, Essentialism

0:15.1

and Effortless. I want you to come with me on an exploration of self-discovery. On this

0:21.4

podcast we decipher what really matters and unravel the non-essential chaos that gets

0:28.6

in the way of us being able to build an essential life. Today is the first ever episode on this

0:37.1

podcast where I'm just going to get the chance to talk directly with you. I've been feeling to do

0:43.2

this for some time but there's a subject that's so important to me. It has I think the power of

1:22.6

and tells you something even different than the words I'm sharing that can help you get greater

1:29.8

clarity in your own life but also greater clarity with the people that matter most to you.

1:38.2

Let me ask you a question right now. I want you to think of a time when you have felt misunderstood.

1:45.9

In fact, I want you to think of a single word to describe that experience. Recently I went on

1:55.4

social media and I put that question out to everybody and I was surprised by the answers I received

2:01.8

especially by the pure depth of the responses. Listen to these words, betrayed, unjust, isolating,

2:16.1

gut-wrenching, embarrassing. Somebody said where poison creeps in. Another gutted,

2:26.8

fearful, disheartening, suffocating, terrifying, outcast, unworthy, unvalued, unsafe, triggered,

2:39.5

hurt, depressed, debilitated, stupid. I think it would be hard to come up with any words

2:50.0

more serious than those. And so it puts into context something that I have learned through,

2:59.6

let's say, 20 years of thinking on this subject and it's this, that being understood
