For the last six years, AAPF has had a residency at Union Chapel on Martha's Vineyard every summer.

How are folks feeling today?

Okay, I share that with you. That's me speaking to a crowd of mostly black women at the first of two events we held in August.

As you heard, the mood is so-so. Of course, we're all happy to be on the vineyard. It's a place we visit to recharge and reconnect with our friends and family. But there's a tension in the air. It's a place we visit to recharge and reconnect with our friends and family.

But there's a tension in the air.

It's a tension that I've felt in every city I've been to this summer.

And even here, on the vineyard, a place many black folks consider to be a safe haven,

it's hard to shake the feeling that things aren't quite right.

We met at the chapel to talk about it. Have a listen.

So in less than a year, we have witnessed the whole sale destruction of the very principles of equal

opportunity, of racial justice, of inclusion.

We've seen this being carried out by an authoritarian regime that has taken place in the White

House.

We've witnessed a regime set ablaze the federal bureaucracy as we know it. We have witnessed American troops invade

American cities. We've seen people being disappeared off the streets torn apart from their families,

taken away from their homes without any legal recourse. We have witnessed the passing of the big brutal bill, which covers

tens of millions of low-income Americans, including 4.4 million black women and nearly two-thirds

of all births to black mothers. We are witnessing attempts by Republican legislators to disenfranchise entire districts

and to gerrymander Texas representative, Jasmine Crockett, out of her own district. Just think about
