Summary

This week, the Squiggly Careers podcast welcomes a special guest! Emma Rosen, author of The Radical Sabbatical, talks to Helen about what we can learn about finding a job you love by exploring multiple career possibilities. Emma took this approach to the extreme by exploring 25 different jobs in 1 year, during her Radical Sabbatical, documenting it in her blog www.25before25.co.uk during this time. We break down what she learnt into set of key insights and actions we can all apply to open up our thinking about future roles and opportunities. Hosted on Acast. Hi everyone and welcome to this week's Squiggly Career podcast. I'm Helen Tupper and this week I am not joined by the very lovely Sarah Ellis who is my partner in all things squiggly and all things amazing if. Instead, today I am joined by one of our guests on the podcast. I'm joined by Emma Rosen. Hi, thank you for having me this week.

0:22.2

And I will tell you lots more about Emma in a second, but I should just say that Sarah and I have not

0:26.0

had a big falling out. Amazing if it's still continuing. But one of the things that we wanted to do this

0:30.6

year, just a guess a bit of variety on the podcast, is to bring in some new voices and we thought that three of us might be a bit overkill. So that started

0:38.4

last month when Sarah was talking to Bruce Daisley. Hopefully you've had to listen to that podcast.

0:42.8

And today I'll be talking to Emma all about her squiggly career, which is fascinating. I cannot

0:47.7

wait to get into it. And we're going to be talking about some stuff on strengths, some stuff on

0:52.2

confidence and networks as well.

1:00.5

So lots of different, amazing if topics covered all through the lens of Emma's career on the podcast this week.

1:02.7

So let's get straight into it then.

1:07.7

I became aware of Emma because someone actually from, I think our community said,

1:11.8

have you seen Emma's new book, which is coming out, which was towards the end of last year?

1:17.8

And Emma had a book that came out in January called 25 Under 25, and it's radical sabbatical.

1:20.7

And it's all about the 25 jobs that she did before she was 25.

1:25.7

And I think it is as squiggly as someone could possibly get in their career.

1:26.8

So maybe we'll start there.

1:28.2

What inspired you, Emma, to do 25 jobs before you were 25? I think with these things, you tend to either be inspired by

1:34.1

inspiration or desperation. And I was definitely in the latter category, I would say. I was in a job

1:40.4

that I really wasn't enjoying. But it was the sort of job that was meant to be my

1:44.4

dream job. It was the sort of job I've been aiming for for years and years and years.

1:47.3

My degrees had been towards it. My parents were very proud of me. I was earning a good salary.

1:52.3

It was a stable job. There was job security. There was a clear path of progression. It ticked
