Summary

PEPFAR, or the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, was initiated by President Bush in 2003 is credited with saving 25 million lives over the past 20 years and remains the largest commitment to a single disease in history. But the global bipartisan program is now at the mercy of American politics. Dr. Chris Beyrer, director of the Duke Global Health Institute and a member of the scientific advisory board for PEPFAR, returns to the podcast to talk with Stephanie Desmon about why PEPFAR's reauthorization is in jeopardy and what the failure of reauthorization could mean for global health.

Today I want to talk to you about PEPFAR.

And the first question I have, of course, is what is it?

PEPFAR, which is an acronym for the president's emergency plan for AIDS relief, is the largest

commitment in history to a single disease.

It was initiated by President George W. Bush in 2003, with an initial

$15 billion commitment over five years. And what is it accomplished in that 20 years? Yeah, well, it's

been reauthorized four times now. So this year actually is the 20th anniversary of the PEPFAR program.

And it has maintained, I think, almost uniquely of programs of this size and scope.

True bipartisan support for all of these 20 years. So it was continued by President Obama. It was continued by President Trump.
