We come to you on Tuesday.

There has been a stunning international event.

It is widely suspected the Israelis are responsible for a coordinated attack via pagers in Lebanon held by Hezbollah fighters.

Some 2,800 as of this broadcast are injured, about nine killed. And this is obviously a retaliation for an attempted assassination of a Israeli official. And it is one more installation

in the ongoing war. and it is a war.

It's a low-level war at this point between Hezbollah and Israel.

You'll recall that hundreds of thousands of people on both sides of the war have had to evacuate,

so as not to come within the range of the rockets.

And Hezbollah continues to send rockets into Israeli territory

aimed at civilians. So what's going on? Well, the latest maneuver may be the equivalent of a

brushback pitch. Israel is telling Hezbollah, don't you even think about a wider war?

Because we have you completely hog-tied. And if that's what it's about, then this can be seen as a

positive development, a recognition by the Israelis, that a wire war is not in anyone's interest.

Now, there's another possibility, and that is that this is the beginning of a wire war,

that for whatever political or military reasons, Bibi Netanahu thinks it's in his interest

to have a war. Now, maybe he thinks it could be a quick war.

But I have to say, a war at this point with Hamas still beyond the boundaries of a peace treaty

would be devastating for the Israeli people. It would mar their international reputation, which is already

thin. It would, I think, create a backlash among the Israeli public, who polling is beginning

to show is shifting much more in favor of a negotiated peace than an endless war to destroy every last

Hamas fighter.
