Summary

Jen Rubin is joined by Robert P. Jones to discuss his book 'The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy' and the updated observations in the paperback version. He explores the connection between Trump and his base supporters, highlighting the role of Christian nationalism in their support. Jones explains that white Christian nationalists want to restore their dominance in society and view Trump as a means to achieve that.
He also discusses the struggle between a pluralistic democracy and a vision of America as a Christian nation. Jones shares insights from his survey on authoritarianism, Christian nationalism, and the Republican Party, emphasizing the need for resistance and persuasion to uphold democratic values.

Hi, this is Jen Rubin, and this is Jen Rubin's Green Room. We're recording this before,

0:05.7

the day before, the first presidential debate, maybe the only presidential debate between

0:10.6

Vice President Kamala Harris and felon and former President Donald Trump. Well, a few things have

0:18.3

happened before the debate that we should review, but I also want to focus on how the debate is being set up, being covered, being positioned by the media.

0:31.5

The most important pre-debate event, I think, is the very robust endorsement of both Dick Cheney and

0:42.3

Liz Cheney for Kamala Harris. And what Liz Cheney in particular said was, you can't play this

0:51.1

game of saying, I don't like Trump, but I'm not going to vote for Kamala Harris.

0:55.8

There is a binary choice. You're either for one or you're for the other. You either believe

1:02.5

that Trump is a menace to our democracy, to the rule of law, to decency, to our national security, or you don't. And in doing that, I think she

1:14.4

stripped away the really mealy-mouth spineless excuses of a lot of Republicans, both elected

1:21.6

Republicans, former elected, like Nikki Haley, and a whole slew of pundits who are forever making excuses why they

1:31.3

cannot endorse Kamala Harris. Well, she hasn't given enough detail on her housing proposal,

1:37.5

you see. This is nonsense. All you need to know is one guy cannot be trusted with power, tried to subvert the election, wants to use violence against his political opponent, and the other doesn't.

1:51.7

But Liz Cheney said something else that I thought was very important, and I wish those Republicans would listen to.

1:59.9

And what she said was that there is an affirmative case for her

2:04.7

as commander-in-chief to defend national security. She came right out and said it. She said

2:11.1

that she understands we're an exceptional nation. Kamala Harris understands the importance of alliances. Kamala Harris

2:19.5

respects the military. So she wasn't simply saying not Trump. She was giving a pretty full-throated

2:27.6

endorsement of Harris herself. And aside from political cowardness and just imbued in deeply entrenched partisan tribalism,

2:41.5

there is no reason not to endorse Kamala Harris if you understand that Trump is what Trump is.

2:48.2

Now, you of course have the pre-debate polls, which are now beginning to

2:54.2

dribble out. There's one from Pew. There's one from the New York Times. And I will say this.
