When I was growing up, so-called satanic panic was a mass hysteria phenomenon that spread

across the country and worldwide.

Seemingly normal towns were suddenly panic-stricken at the idea that

members of their community were performing animal mutilations and human

sacrifice as part of satanic rituals aimed at pleasing the devil.

It could have been anyone, your neighbor, your children's teachers, your mailman,

no one was immune to Lucifer's lore.

The Manson family murders and the publication of the satanic Bible, both in 1969, sparked the initial

hint of fear of the devil's influence.

Hollywood films such as Rosemary's baby, the Exorcist and the omen brought further introspection on the topic.

Toss in serial killers such as the

Zodiac, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and son of Sam, and society's acceptance of

devils among us only grew further.

Then the 1980 memoir Michelle Remembers
