0:18.7	When I meet people and they hear that I'm grammar girl, it's not uncommon for them to say something like,
0:24.5	no dangling participles, am I right?
0:27.0	But I get the sense that while dangling participles are something they vaguely remember they're supposed to avoid,
0:33.5	they don't remember what they actually are.
0:36.2	It's more of a knee jerk. Oh my gosh, I remember this one grammar thing and I'm going to blurt it out,
0:41.0	rather than shared solidarity.
0:43.5	So before we talk about what it means to dangle a participle,
0:47.6	we have to answer the question, what is a participle?
0:51.6	It's a tough question because participles have a few different jobs.
0:55.6	Today, we're only going to talk about their job that makes them look like adjectives.
1:00.4	They tell you more about the noun that follows.
1:03.9	Participles can be in the present tense or the past tense,
1:07.4	and the present participle always ends with I and G.
1:11.7	For example, dream is a verb and dreaming is its present participle.
1:16.8	Speed is a verb and speeding is its present participle.
1:21.2	To use the verb, you could say he will speed on the freeway.
1:25.2	Speed is an action, a verb.
