Summary

Why are so many women denied testosterone?

In this episode, Dr Louise Newson is joined by US menopause specialist Dr Susan Hardwick-Smith for a vital conversation about testosterone and why so many women are still being denied treatment that could transform their lives.

Drawing on both personal and clinical experience, Louise and Susan discuss the widespread misunderstanding surrounding testosterone inwomen, why symptoms of hormone deficiency are so often dismissed as stress or depression and the importance of individualised care.

They explore how hormones affect the brain, energy, motivation, cognition and long-term health, not just libido, and why current guidelines often fail to reflect what doctors see in real-life practice.

So Susan, it's very exciting to have you here, usually with guests in the US.

0:07.1

I've never met them before, but I have had the pleasure of meeting you, having lunch with you,

0:12.3

spending time with you recently at a conference in Los Angeles.

So it's great Mo Keirha, who's been on my podcast twice. Mo is a great friend of my husband, who's also a urologist, has been on my podcast talking about testosterone and everyone wants to know about testosterone. And it feels... Yeah, and it feels like testosterone is almost like a naughty word for some people and it's the best thing ever for others.

So I'm really keen to like just talk to you about testosterone but also about how we can individualise care for women and personalised care and just a bit about your approach really. So you're a doctor. You've got a really

0:57.2

interesting background and you ended up being in America even though you're originally from New Zealand.

1:04.8

So even that's a great story. So can you just say a bit about your background before we start

1:08.5

talking about testosterone? Yeah. well, that's such a

1:11.3

nice introduction. Thank you. It's so lovely to be with you. And I've been following you for ages and had this amazing opportunity to meet you in L.A. at a meeting and we hit it off. And we've got connections, as you said, through Dr. Kura, who I just saw on your podcast a few weeks ago. So yes, I was born in New Zealand, moved here when I was 18,

1:28.4

trained as a traditional MD, went through the traditional OB-GEN training. And I practiced

1:33.7

traditional OB-GEN for 20 years, delivered 7,000 babies, did all the surgeries, all the

1:38.4

wonderful things that we can do in that specialty. But as your listeners know, we learned

1:43.8

nothing about menopause,

1:45.1

like absolutely nothing.

1:47.0

And so when I reached my mid-40s

1:49.7

and started having those symptoms myself,

1:51.5

I was absolutely clueless about what to do to help myself.

1:55.0

I went through about a year of being untreated.

1:58.8

I didn't think I was old enough to go through menopause. I was a

2:01.3

gynaecologist because I thought, I'm 45. That can't be happening. Completely clueless. And then when I

2:07.0

finally figured out how to replace my hormones safely and I felt amazing, I retired from that

2:14.4

traditional OB-Din practice, went into a menopause-specific practice in
