Summary

Our uncle Dan was a huge influence on both of us, albeit in very different ways. For Dave, Dan was a surrogate father figure who helped guide him through adolescence. For me, Dan was more of a kindred spirit, and our friendship mostly happened in the last decade or so of his life. When we combine our memories, we get a more complete understanding of the man. (How did I not know he loved jazz?)

surrogate, I guess, but, uh, um, additional. Uh, he was, you know, he did things and understood

things that my own father didn't. And, you know, he did things and understood things that my own father didn't.

And, you know, like a lot of, they were different kinds of men. You know, my dad was a writer.

He was a thinker. He was a reader. He was much more in the world of the mind. And Dan is, was more in the world of the mind and um dan is was more in the world of material things he was more um you know

about fixing things and um flying airplanes and building houses and uh he was definitely much more of
