Nearly one year ago, in March of 2017, 49ers legend Dwight Clark announced that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

Since then his physical condition has worsened but he is still the same person with the same appreciation for his place in 49ers history

and the same sense of humor. Clark is 61 years old and he is uncertain about what the future

holds for him and his wife Kelly.

Clark invited the 49ers Insider Podcast into his Capitola home recently to talk about his

football career and his new reality of living with ALS.

Dwight Clark is an unlikely hero for a professional football organization.

As a wide receiver at Clemson University in the late 1970s, he caught just 33 passes in his

college career. He never thought he would even get a chance to go to an NFL training

camp, but his post-college plans took a dramatic turn just weeks before the 1979 draft when 49ers coach Bill Walsh came to Clemson to work out Clark's college roommate, allAmerican quarterback Steve Fuller.

Clark was ready to head out the door and root to playing a round of golf when he answered the telephone.
