Summary

What is the purpose of fitness in our lives? We raise this question because we're told keeping fit is good for us, but what type of fitness, and how does that blend with our goals, such as losing weight or building muscle or just being as healthy as we can be? This podcast goes deep quickly, because it has too. The fitness industry is too quick to generalise terms such as 'fitness' and 'healthy', and without identifying what fitness means to each of us, and why we engage in it, we might waste a lot of time and energy doing the wrong things, for the wrong reasons.

Everyone can be radio. Hope you are having an awesome day. Tom. How you doing? Good, man. I'm good. How are you?

0:12.0

Not bad. Not bad. Still struggling back and forth for the old long COVID, but we'll get there. You've just had a nice little holiday roaming around the UK countryside.

0:23.0

Heck yeah.

So for those of you who can't tell, I am from the North East, but this means that I'm very fortunate in that we're now and a half away from the Lake District. So we go there quite often.

And I just took a week off and trolled around near water and lots of trees without any screens. So it was delightful. And I do recommend it to anyone who's got the opportunity to do something similar.

Nice. Well, where I live is beautiful, but it's very flat and very sort of typical English countryside. So to live close to the lakes, the mountains, like what I would describe as like quite breathtaking landscape.

1:03.0

Lucky man. That's cool.

1:05.0

It's absolutely stunning. And it is interesting to go away on holiday and come back with leg doms just from walking places. So yeah.

1:13.0

Nice. Well, we've got a little bit of an interesting conversation today with any sort of loosely mapped out an idea for today.

1:23.0

And what happened or what spurred, sorry, this kind of topic, which is the purpose of fitness is our attendance at thick expo.

1:34.0

Well, me and Tom went and we were speaking on the speaker stage and we both had our topics and stuff, but as you go throughout the day, like any fitness event, you have a look around, you have a look what stores are there, what people there, what messaging is there, what the whole vibe is like.

1:54.0

And it struck me because I was like, oh my god, it feels like I've gone back in time a little bit.

2:00.0

And I've sort of reflected on my experience of fit expo and what I kind of thought of it and the fitness scene and stuff.

2:07.0

And I started to sort of unpack what was going around in my brain and stuff.

2:12.0

And it kind of made me think about what point in my journey I found that environment inspirational.

2:19.0

And why at this point in my journey, I didn't find that inspirational.

2:24.0

And I kind of wanted to draw on I suppose my reflections and Tom's experience from that expo and what fitness is to help anyone navigating fitness for themselves listening to this podcast as what is the purpose of fitness for me.

2:41.0

Because fitness, I think in its broad sense, almost gets kind of sort of like it's generalised very quickly in just our industry in the media.

2:54.0

And we kind of see fitness as this thing that we're kind of advised to do because it's good for us.

3:00.0

And quite often when we think of fitness, we will quite often think of something that is probably that we've done before, like we've run.

3:09.0

Or we've played a particular sport or we've gone to the gym and that's what we think of fitness.

3:15.0

And the reason why I'm kind of going through this thought process is the fitness event that we went to was very focused on bodybuilding, strength sports, power sports and it all fell.
