0:00.0 | Hey, everyone. Bank of a radio. How on earth are you doing you beautiful, beautiful people? Tom say hello. |
0:10.0 | Hello, everyone. I want my sound. Sounds a bit better than it did in the last show, by the way, because I listened back and I've realized that what I did was I set up my computer and then I set up my microphone. |
0:23.0 | And then I didn't connect it to and so I was talking into my basic bitch laptop microphone, which is why I sounded like I was speaking through like a toilet roll tube. |
0:33.0 | So hopefully it should be better this week. Awesome. |
0:37.0 | Well, we're going to dive straight into it today. We won't deliberate partly because I don't want to tie myself out because I've had four hours sleep after being up half a night with Ivy. |
0:51.0 | So we'll jump into it. We'll make sure I can be as coherent as possible and hopefully will bring you some value. |
0:58.0 | Now today's show has been stimulated by someone that's written into the show and you would have seen the topic of today's show being how to avoid the afternoon slump, which is a very common thing when it comes to energy in my experience as a nutrition coach. |
1:16.0 | Which is something you end up talking quite a lot about with quite a lot of clients, like trying to, you know, yeah, just avoid that 3pm like like dragging through the day and there's lots of different reasons why this can happen, how this can happen. |
1:32.0 | But firstly, I'm going to read through the question, Tom's probably going to jump in with some cool stuff and then we'll try and get as practical as possible. |
1:40.0 | So here's the email and she emails it to Tom, which is very sad because I didn't even get a mention, but Tom, that's because you're big time now. |
1:52.0 | Hey Tom, I hope all is well and you're enjoying the lockdown lifting in the UK. I'm getting in touch about something today that's been on my mind for a while, the early afternoon slump. |
2:04.0 | For as long as I can remember, I've always had a bad energy slump in the middle of the day. I've experimented with food to see if it makes a difference. |
2:14.0 | EG low or no carb lunch. I tend to do better on a low carb to moderate diet anyway. |
2:22.0 | And there's been a slight improvement if I don't have that many carbs, but I still feel really drained. |
2:28.0 | This was less of an issue before kids. I just have a nap. But now with two to look after, those couple of hours can be quite a struggle, which kind of sucks every day if I'm honest. |
2:40.0 | I exercise three to four times a week. I eat a omnivorous diet and I hydrate well. My sleep isn't great. I'm up feeding a lot, but I had this issue before kids too, so I don't see the sleep as a cause. |
2:56.0 | So the question, I understand on natural circadian rhythm takes a dip in the day, but are there differences in physiology that leads some people to have worse afternoon slumps than others? And if so, why? |
3:11.0 | And in short, is there anything we can do about it? Thanks, as always, Nina. |
3:19.0 | So I thought this was a really interesting question for a few different reasons. |
3:24.0 | But the first thing that I would say is, I mean, there's going to be a difference physiologically between people along basically any metric you can think of. |
3:33.0 | People are different. We vary. But what you need to be really cautious of doing is assuming that those variances are really big. |
3:41.0 | And also assuming that those variances are necessarily an explanation for an issue that you're experiencing. |
