Kathy Canning Mello, retired FBI agent and profiler and co-host of the Audible series FBI Profilers Criminal Archives with Jim Clemente.

Yeah. So, Kathy, we're going to continue talking about this case where a young guy, 20 years old,

Matthew Lane, was in his freshman dorm room at college when the FBI basically knocked

on the door and came in with a search warrant.

And they had been, they had been made aware of the fact that he had, he had conducted a

cyber attack. He initiated it. I don't know if he's the one that, that the ransoming, but I know that his work and culminated

in this company having to pay $3 million.

And if, as we said last week, he's been arrested, he's going to jail for four years, he's young and he's scared and he's been arrested. He's going to jail for four years.

He's young and he's scared and he's contrite.

But the question is, how is he going to pay his $14 million fine?

I mean, if he's fine, $14 million, do you think that's how much money he stole?

I think that's probably just a fraction of what he stole, what he was able to collect. In five years of hacking, I'm sure there were a lot of

other victims out there that had to pay a ransomware. Yeah, well, I'm not sure. But, you know,

here he is hacking into this big corporation.

But he spent so much of his time gaming, and that was the source. That's how he was recruited.

And in the same way that kids are groomed into sexual victimization by predators online.

This is an example of predators grooming gamers into becoming black hat hackers,

ones that are only out there to basically make money, to hurt people, to get revenge, all sorts of
