Summary

Alcohol Awareness Month is a public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol. The program was started in April 1987 with the intention of targeting college-aged students who might be drinking too much as part of their newfound freedom. It has since become a national movement to draw more attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism as well as how to help families and communities deal with drinking problems. Since Neil and I are well acquainted with the 12 steps of recovery, and especially since Neil began his recovery journey in a traditional 12 step non-denominational meeting founded on the principles of AA, we decided this month we would share some of the basic concepts behind Alcoholics Anonymous, especially since right now in isolation so many people are suffering with their addictions or realizing they might have a problem that they need help with. We really believe this topic will reach everyone at some point in some capacity, whether you yourself struggle with addiction or someone you love does. We hope that today’s episode sheds light on an issue that’s sometimes hard to find solid solutions with, and that if you know someone who might be struggling that you’ll share it with them.
