Joel David Rifkin was adopted by an upper middle class Long Island couple in 1959 when he was just three weeks old.

His biological mother was a college student and his father was a veteran, both in their early 20s and felt their son had a better chance at life after being adopted.

amongst his peers due to poor social skills and performed poorly due to learning disabilities.

He murdered a sex worker named Heidi Balk in his home, dismembered her body,

and removed her teeth and fingerprints.

Finally, he placed her severed head in a paint can and left it in the woods of a golf course
