Joel David Rifkin was adopted by an upper middle class Long Island couple in 1959 when he was just three weeks old.

His biological mother was a college student and his father was a veteran, both in their early 20s and felt their son had a better chance at life after being adopted.

When he was older, Joel was unpopular

amongst his peers due to poor social skills and performed poorly due to learning disabilities.

He graduated and attempted to attend college, but left before earning his degree to become

as self-employed as a landscaper. Nothing in his early life would indicate the monster that he would later become.

He committed his first murder in 1989 when he was 30 years old.

He murdered a sex worker named Heidi Balk in his home, dismembered her body,

and removed her teeth and fingerprints.

Finally, he placed her severed head in a paint can and left it in the woods of a golf course
