Aquinas, as I explained yesterday, doesn't have a strong incentive to write an entire

trees on the Sacrifice of the Mass. He has references to it, and he has clues to how to understand it.

So what I want to do is look this morning at the scriptural background to the Sacrifice of the Mass is a teaching, some patristic texts,

and if we get to it, we'll look a little bit at medieval and tridentine affirmations.

I doubt we'll get to the Council of Trent, but we'll see.

And then this afternoon, I want to look at Aquinas, some of the kind of complications

that you see about the mystery of the Sacrifice of Mass from the text of Aquinas himself.

And then tomorrow morning talk about the Tomas School, kind of how the Tomas School, different interpretations of what the sacrifice of the mass is.

So let's start with just looking at four scriptural texts

to think about two from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament

to think about how the early church's understanding of the Eucharist as a sacrifice

which is a widespread view in the ancient church and certainly the common view of the whole medieval church

patristic literature you're going to find it referenced, I think, by I

And that's Malachi 111.
