We're going to look at today, just in this one hour, really, at the restantum of the sacrament.

It's going to prepare us to think about the sacrifice of the mass.

But what I'm talking about is, what are the proper effects of the sacramentum, the kind of essence of the sacrament of the Eucharist,

it's the place where Aquinas is the most technical and is certainly the most consequential.

If you look at the Council of Trent on the Eucharist, it's like an abbreviated

representation of Aquinas' own teaching that we've just looked at.

I mean, the teaching of Aquinas on the transubstantiation finds its

way almost directly into the Council of Trent and is as recently, reiterated as recently as

Paul the sixth encyclical Mysterium Fide, where you'll find it again, presented very clearly.

And then echoes in the 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church.

What we're going to read here is not as historically consequential,

but for us who are in religious life,

and specifically for contemplative nuns,

it's particularly nourishing.

I mean, the spirituality of question 79 on the effects of the sacrament,

every article has something for us in terms of like thinking

about what the Eucharist does for us in our spiritual life.

I'm going to try to concentrate here on four articles, a couple of them in particular are significant.

And as is often the case, the first article sort of frames the problem or frames the way he's going to think about the whole question.

Whether grace is bestowed through this sacrament, well, you know he's going to say yes, and you know that it's in accord with that threefold schema we've already looked at.
