That was the spiritual advisor to Kenneth Smith,

who last night became the first person in the US

to be executed using nitrogen gas.

It's completely covering his whole face.

And when they turn the nitrogen on, he began to convuls, he popped up on the gurney over and over and over again.

Smith was given the death penalty for his role in a 1988 murder for hire, and he was killed last night in Alabama after two failed

last minute appeals to the Supreme Court. Little is known about how the

nitrogen hypoxia was carried out because the state's published protocol has been heavily redacted.

And experts have raised concerns that it could cause excessive pain or even torture.

Witnesses from the media say Smith made a lengthy statement before he died, saying,

quote, tonight Alabama caused humanity to take a step backward. They said he appeared conscious

for several minutes into the execution and then shook on the gurney, which an official blamed on the fact Smith was trying to hold his breath.
