After more than a decade of fighting extradition to the U.S.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is on his way back to his home country, Australia.

According to court documents, he's agreed to a plea deal with the Justice Department, that means he'll avoid spending time in an American prison.

Video from WikiLeaks shows Assange leaving the London prison where he spent the past five years and heading to a UK airport where he boarded a plane. He's accused of one of the largest

ever breaches of classified US government material and the plea deal caps a long-running legal saga,

allowing him to return home as a free man.

But first, he has to make a court appearance in a remote U.S. territory in the Pacific, as

CNN's Ivan Watson explains. He has agreed to or he is about to agree to plead guilty to one count.

There is going to be an appearance scheduled before a US federal judge in Saipan.

That's one of the islands in the Northern Mariana Islands

as part of this plea deal.

The prosecutors, we understand,

have called for a sentencing of five years in prison,

and that is about how long Assange has been in that London jail, so it's assumed he'll get

credit for that time served and will likely be released to Australia.

While the deal does still have to be approved by a federal judge,

WikiLeaks and Assange's supporters have been celebrating his release.
