Israel has rejected the ceasefire deal Hamas accepted yesterday and today has sent tanks

into Rafa.

Israel's military says it's taking control of the Palestinian side of the Rafa crossing,

a vital entry point for aid to Gaza on the Egyptian border.

As CNN's Ben Wedeman tells us, so far this isn't the full-scale invasion that Israel's

Prime Minister had been threatening, but a smaller operation.

Certainly it does represent perhaps the beginning of this much anticipated operation.

It is significant that they have taken very quickly the crossing itself.

This is the main entry point or has been for many months of

humanitarian goods going into Gaza and so this basically sort of shuts the door on Gaza in terms of aid getting in, people getting out.

Meanwhile, the UN agency UNRWA says humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza may be brought to a standstill by today's seizure of the

Palestinian side of the Rafa border crossing.

Even before taking control of the Rafa crossing, hospital officials in Gaza say Israeli airstrikes kill 15 people overnight, including a child.

This all happened hours after Israel rejected a ceasefire deal that Hamas accepted, saying it was still far from meeting

its quote requirements. Israel said it will send a delegation to Cairo for further talks,

which Kuthar, one of the mediators said, would resume today.

Qatar and Jordan are hoping a ceasefire deal can be reached.

Meanwhile, the White House says President Joe Biden had been briefed about where things stand on negotiations,
