Hello from CNN I'm Joe Beck with the five things you need to know for Thursday

January 25th as Israel waits to hear whether the International Court of Justice

is going to try to stop its military campaign in Gaza,

its forces have ramped up attacks in the south of the Strip.

The UN says a building sheltering hundreds of people was hit by Israeli tank fire yesterday,

killing at least 12 and injuring dozens more.

That's in the city of Han Yunus, which has come under intense attacks in the past week,

with Israeli forces battering medical facilities,

saying Hamas militants are hiding there.

US national security spokesman John Kirby

says Israel does have a responsibility to protect civilian infrastructure

while it goes after Hamas.

We don't want to see them become scenes of battle.
