She passed away more than 40 years ago, yet she continues to outlive her life.

Her name was Marie, and I stand on the shoulders of this extraordinary

woman. Marie was born in Kansas City in 1903, the daughter of a pastor. She grew up and married a pastor

as well. Together, she and her husband Walter raised six children through years of the Great Depression

and World War II on a preacher's meager income. Her children later

recalled her tiny parsonage where the girls slept in the only bedroom they had, the parents

slept in the living room, and the boys slept in the kitchen. They recalled going to school

without shoes until a few generous teachers quietly stepped in to help meet the need, and they

experienced real hunger at times.

Yet largely because of the extraordinary faith and the influence of their mother Marie,

the children remembered all growing up in a home filled with love for each other and for God.
