Summary

Nancy Scola, reporter and journalist focused on the battle of ideas in Washington, returns to The Realignment. Marshall and Nancy discuss the three big ideas-focused conferences in DC in September: The new right National Conservatism Conference, Abundance 2025, and this week's Anti-Monopoly Summit. They cover the competing stories and ideas discussed at these events, the degree to which each convening contradicts the others, the difficult task of holding bipartisan gatherings during a time of polarization and factionalism, and how politicians can use ideas to build their political brands during an era of anti-establishment and voter skepticism.

Earlier in the summer, I had reporter Nancy Scola on the show to discuss how ideas work in Washington during a period where, since there are so many open questions in American politics and the overall world, a lot of ambitious figures that started attaching

0:21.2

themselves to them.

0:22.7

So we talked about a bunch of different big ideas, everything from antitrust to abundance

0:27.0

and how we can understand the debates in 2025 through that lens.

0:32.0

Last week, we had the abundance conference.

0:34.9

We had the National Conservatism Conference, and this

0:39.1

week we had the Anti-Monopoly Conference by the American Economic Liberties Project.

0:44.5

Nancy was at the Abundance Conference, and she was at the Anti-Monopoly Conference, so I thought

0:49.4

this would be a perfect time to look at this trifecta of different events through the lens of what ideas

0:55.5

are rising and falling in Washington right now.

0:58.5

We also get into the politics of performance and how these big ideas actually translate

1:02.8

into effective political moves and articulations of candidates when voters are clearly looking

1:08.7

for change.

1:09.9

I should also note that during the lead-up

1:13.0

to this episode, I saw a tweet where Nancy explicitly said she came away from the Abundance Conference

1:17.4

not quite knowing what the idea was given out what everything was. So I took this as a personal

1:22.0

opportunity to sort of give the case for always understanding what abundance is pitch is in the

1:26.9

context of all these different

1:28.2

ideas. So hope you all enjoy the conversation. Nancy Scola, welcome back to The Realignment.

1:34.3

Hey, Marshall. Thanks for having me.
