Turn in your Bibles to Romans 4. This is a story of Abraham and Sarah,

who staked their entire existence on the promise of God

that they would have a son,

and out of that son would come a great nation.

They literally had staked everything on the promise of God.

And they waited decade after decade after decade.

Now they're at a point where Sarah is such an old woman

that her womb is dead.

There's no realistic possibility that she's ever going to have a son.

It seems completely hopeless.

Now hear these words.

It says in verse 18, in hope, he believed against hope

that he should become the father of many nations as he had been told, so shall your offspring be.

Now listen to this. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead. It's a nice thing to say.

Some of you are there. Since he was about a hundred years old, some of you are ahead of the class you got there before you're 100.
