Summary

Even though Dr. Jean Sutherland has been diagnosed with cancer three times, she remains strong in the Lord. Her journey through illness has given her a robust theology of suffering and has taught her about true joy. The conviction with which Jean speaks is evidence of the Holy Spirit in her life and makes us want to have a similar kind of relationship with God.

value, intellect, and creativity of women. I'm your host Sarah Stone Street. And I'm your co-host,

Erin Kunkel. Our guest today on the Strong Women podcast is Gene Sutherland.

0:23.1

Now, we learned about Jean from her friend Robin who said, hey, I don't know how to submit a name of a strong woman, but I've got one.

0:33.6

And so we said, let's learn more about Jean. So here's what Robin said about her.

I have a good friend who I believe is the epitome of the strong woman as she is portrayed in your

podcast. My friend Gene is an internal medicine physician who has lived her life leaning into

0:52.4

her gracious Heavenly Father. She's endured at least three

0:56.0

rounds of cancer that have hampered her ability to practice medicine. The surgeries have even

1:02.0

made it difficult for her to eat and speak, yet all she wants to do is tell the world how

1:07.2

great our God is. I called Jean a couple weeks ago just to kind of get a feel for

1:12.2

her story and for her to kind of hear from us and see if she'd even be willing to come on our

1:17.7

podcast. And I just fell in love with her right away. At the end of the conversation, I said,

1:22.8

oh, Gene, I can tell that I just, this is going to be a wonderful conversation. And I know our listeners and Aaron and I are going to enjoy hearing about how God has worked in your life.

1:34.8

And she said, well, it's funny because just a few weeks ago I was praying.

1:40.2

And I said, God, don't you want me to tell your story to other people of what you've done in my life?

1:47.5

And then her friend Robin submitted her name and I give her a call and she's like, oh, so I felt like, well, now we're definitely interviewing Gene because I feel like God just placed us together.

1:57.9

So, Gene, thank you for coming on with us today.

2:02.4

Thank you for having me. So, Gene, thank you for coming on with us today. Thank you for having me.

2:09.6

So, Gene, we like to start everyone's story at the beginning because how we grow up is so formative to the women we become later on. And so could you tell us just where you grew up, what kind of family you grew up in?

2:20.4

I grew up in our tuna, Pennsylvania, central Pennsylvania. Both my parents were strong Christians,

2:30.6

and I went to church probably four days or weeks, one of those that went to every meeting.
