Hello everyone and welcome back to the rebuttal podcast where we break down case law, comedy

and chaos in the legal field. I am your host, Reb Maisel, and today's episode

has a trigger warning for graphic descriptions of a very violent, gruesome death. So please

listen and watch at your discretion. I am not usually speechless when talking about a case,

but this one is genuinely

unbelievable and not for good reasons. This is the briefest summary I can give you. On January 26,

2001, 33-year-old Diane Whipple, college lacrosse coach, and former national lacrosse star,

came home from the grocery store to her apartment she shared with Sharon Smith,

her partner of seven years at 2398 Pacific Avenue in San Francisco, California. There, in the

hallway outside her apartment, she was attacked by one of two Prisa Kinnerio dogs named

Bain and Hera. Bain was 130 pounds. Diane was 110. Bain bit her 77 times.

The only parts of her body that were spared were the top of her scalp and the souls of her feet.

Prosecutors said the woman walking the two dogs at the time stood by as Bain ripped out Diane's throat. The chief medical examiner

said the dog seized and crushed Whipple's larynx to asphyxiate her as she screamed for help.

But she wouldn't pass away until hours later in the hospital just after getting the chance

to hold her partner Sharon's hand one last time.

Her cause of death was a combination of asphyxiation and blood loss.
