Welcome to the Cambrian podcast. My name is Jeff Krasnow. The term stress typically conjures negative associations. But what if I told you that not all stress is bad and there are actually benefits

0:23.6

to both physiological and psychological stressors? So I'm currently writing a book and we'll release a course under the title good stress, which explores a variety of self-imposed, acute, health-conferring

0:41.3

stress protocols. As I've been developing this project, I reconnected with my dear old friend,

0:49.4

the award-winning chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and wellness leader, Seamus Mullen.

0:56.2

Seamus was somewhat serendipitously also diving into the adaptive applications of stress.

1:04.3

So we've ironically leveraged our mutual obsession with stress to rekindle our friendship

1:10.5

and share our learnings,

1:12.5

which includes this podcast. So in our conversation, Shamus and I stress the importance

1:18.9

of cultivating balance or homeostasis and how experiencing adversity, especially when we

1:26.2

choose the adversity, helps us with this project.

1:30.3

Now we distinguish chronic stress, which is modern and ongoing, from acute short-term stress,

1:38.3

and how the dosage and frequency of deliberate stressors can impact our overall well-being.

1:46.5

We talk about how challenges and stressors, when appropriately managed, lead to increased

1:52.7

resilience and activate longevity pathways and growth over time.

1:58.1

We talk about how short-term discomfort can have long-term benefits, while the excessive

2:05.7

comforts of our on-demand world can lead to a lack of distress tolerance and adaptability to

2:13.9

adversity. And we also dive into the mismatch between the slow pace of evolution and the

2:20.5

rapid changes in modern culture and how that phenomenon has led to evolutionary mismatches

2:27.7

and various health issues and a decline in resilience at the species level. And we also share the myriad practices that we have

2:37.4

both adopted to intentionally expose ourselves to stress and in turn become more adapted to an

2:47.7

increasingly chaotic world. So if you're interested in registering for my course titled Good Stress, you can do so at
