**Episode Summary: The 1-3-1 Problem Solving Method for Small Business Owners**

Co-hosts Henry Lopez and David Begin introduce the 1-3-1 Problem Solving Method, a simple yet effective approach to empower your team to independently tackle challenges.

This method encourages critical thinking, autonomy, and proactive problem-solving by guiding team members to define a problem, brainstorm three possible solutions, and then recommend one solution to implement.

As a small business owner, you don't have to be the Chief Problem Solver. By teaching your team to use the 1-3-1 method, you can delegate decision-making, develop your team's leadership skills, and free yourself to focus on strategic activities.

We'll walk through how to introduce this method to your team, using real-world examples, and share tips on how to foster a culture of independent problem-solving.

Key benefits of the 1-3-1 Method include:

- Empowering teams to solve problems on their own.

- Reducing dependency on management for day-to-day issues.

- Accelerating decision-making.

- Encouraging proactive, strategic thinking and boosting accountability.

Listen to this podcast episode to learn how to implement this method and develop a more self-sufficient, confident, and capable team.

Welcome to this episode of The How We Business. This is Henry Lopez. And my co-host is Davidgan. David, welcome back on the show. Thanks for having me, Henry. We're glad we're recording this the day after the hurricane came rolling through the East Coast of Florida. Milton, right? Gosh, I don't even know the name, but I think it's Milton. Yeah, it's Milton. Yeah, we were fortunate. You know, we're on the East Coast. I'm on the East Coast about an hour north of Palm Beach, and so we got a couple of the outer bands. The scariest thing was several tornadoes that were spawned, but we were good. We didn't even lose power, so we were very fortunate. Yeah, good shape. So yeah. All right, well, we're going to talk about problem solving,

0:57.0

specifically a method that power, so we were very fortunate. Yeah, good shape. Yeah. All right, well, we're going to talk about

0:55.9

problem solving, specifically a method that actually you taught me, or a version of it anyway. There's

1:02.6

various versions of this method, but we'll call it the 131 problem solving method. And so David

1:09.1

are going to explore, David and I are going to explore this

1:11.5

method on this episode so you can use it for yourself. But I think even more importantly and

1:16.4

powerfully is to help your team develop this, use this as a way to empower them to make decisions,

1:24.8

which is so important. David and I talked about this on previous episodes,

1:28.9

how when we are, and we'll explore this, when we are the firefighter in chief, as I like to say,

1:35.0

the ultimate decision maker, that doesn't scale. And part of it is we tend to undermine our teams

1:42.3

on them being able to make decisions. And so this is a method

1:45.9

by which you can help them at least bring to you possible solutions. So that's what we're

1:51.7

going to talk about on this episode. You can find all of the Howa Business resources, including the

2:13.1

All right. So as I mentioned, you and I did an episode a bit back, episode 530, complex decision making,

2:20.4

which is kind of related here, where we address, you know, how do you make complex decisions in a business?

2:26.1

This is now kind of a tool related to that, the 131 problem solving method.

2:31.9

And let me explain it and then we'll get into it, David.

2:39.2

But at a high level, the way I'd like to define it is the one three one problem solving method teaches ourselves, but more importantly, teaches team members to independently analyze
