The Bible Study Podcast, Episode 54. This is the third series in a study on the book of Romans called Christianity 101.

0:18.4

Welcome to the Bible study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. As we've talked about in the last

0:23.7

two sessions, we'll be studying the book of Romans here for a while. And we're starting today in

0:28.5

Romans chapter two, starting in verse one. And remember the context for this chapter, as well as the

0:34.3

context for the end of the first chapter, is that Paul is establishing

0:38.3

what people need to be saved from. So these chapters, end of chapter one, chapter two,

0:44.1

and the beginning of chapter three, are talking about sin, that state of brokenness between us

0:49.0

and God. And starting in chapter two, you therefore have no no excuse you who passed judgment on someone else

0:56.5

for at whatever point you judge the other you are condemning yourself because you who pass judgment

1:01.7

do the same things now we know that god's judgment against those who do such things is based on

1:07.4

truth so when you a mere man pass judgment them, and yet do the same things,

1:13.2

do you think you will escape God's judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his

1:19.1

kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

1:25.1

So this particular paragraph, and let me just do a quick aside, that paragraphs and verses

1:30.3

are not in the original version, but have been put in later on by scholars who are trying to

1:34.3

make it a little easier to read and to look something up and reference them.

1:38.3

But anyway, this particular paragraph particularly talks about judgment and why it's not

1:43.3

our business to pass judgment. So Paul seemed to be

1:47.1

anticipating that people who read the list of things that he talked about in the first chapter,

1:52.7

which was envy and murder and strife and malice, gossip, slanderers, god haters, insolence,

1:58.3

arrogance, he talked about homosexuality, talked about faithless, heartless, ruthless, senseless, all of these sort of things, that there were going to be some set of people who would say, aha, he's talking about you, Fred. And Paul is trying to say here, hang on a second, before we talk any more about sin, let's talk about you who are trying to pass judgment on someone

2:17.9

else.
