Human beings across the entire lifespan have only four phases of metabolism and everyone goes through them in exactly the same way.

0:10.0

We need metabolism to survive. We need metabolism to function. We need metabolism to Commune. My name is Jeff Krasno. Today on the show, we're exploring metabolism.

0:30.6

Now, simply put, metabolism refers to the total amount of chemical processes that occur within living organisms,

0:41.4

including humans, to maintain life.

0:43.9

It involves the conversion of nutrients from the food that we consume into energy,

0:50.6

as well as the synthesis and breakdown of other molecules necessary for life and cellular function.

0:59.6

Now, metabolism can be divided into two main categories, catabolism and anabolism.

1:06.3

During catabolism, complex molecules like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are broken down into

1:13.3

simpler substrates that are then leveraged by the cell to produce adenosine tryphosphate,

1:20.2

ATP, are cells' primary energy currency. Now, in enabalism, the molecules are synthesized. In this phase, simpler molecules are

1:31.2

used to build more complex ones. For example, building blocks like amino acids are aggregated

1:38.1

together to form muscle tissue, enzymes, neurotransmitters, transport molecules, and others.

1:45.0

Now, these catabolic and anabolic processes are tightly regulated to maintain a balance,

1:53.0

ensuring that the body has enough energy and enough building blocks for cellular function. Now, that's not too complicated, right?

2:02.7

It's like Lego, construction and destruction, yang, and yen.

2:07.2

Today's episode is a series of excerpts from fascinating conversations I've had about human metabolism.

2:14.6

Now, first up is Dr. William Lee, physician, scientist, and best-selling author,

2:21.9

who presents recent research that upends our traditional understanding of human metabolism.

2:29.8

So if you've ever thought that you were just born with slow metabolism or that your metabolism is slowing down as you age, well, get ready to have your world turned upside down.

2:43.2

So without further delay, I present Dr. William Lee on the four phases of human metabolism as well as what you can do to optimize your

2:55.4

metabolism over time. I used to say things like, well, I was just born with a slow metabolism.

3:03.0

That was just kind of the hand that I was dealt by the dealer of life.
