get better, and become more. Here's the topic. Tell them why. When you give critical feedback,

if you don't clarify up front why you're doing it, whomever you're giving it to is more likely to become defensive or think you're picking on them or that you don't believe that they're smart enough or otherwise perhaps even incompetent.

This is especially true with younger people who may be more sensitive to critical feedback.

Now if you say instead, I have really high

standards of performance in this job that you're in. And I have every reason to believe you're

capable of hitting those standards. So what I'm going to share with you will make it easier

for you to do so going forward. This approach defines clarity, cares enough to correct when clarity isn't met,

affirms belief in the person, and provides correction and direction to help them do better going

forward and live up to the standard you believe they are capable of achieving. And it does

all of this more in a spirit of collaborating than clobbering.
