I've been excited about this opportunity, not just because technology allows me to speak to you personally in this way, but because I think that Lent is probably of the Christian calendar year the least understood and the least observed of all of the Christian holidays, seasons, I should say.

We make a massive celebration of Christmas, and there's nothing wrong with that.

We should celebrate Christ's birth, but we were never commanded to remember his birth.

In scripture, we're commanded to remember his death until he returns.

And so, Lent is very important.

It's that season where we consider both our need for Christ's work and the nature of Christ's work for us.

And so I want to expose you as we think about Lent to one of the most striking

paradoxes in scripture. It confronts the way we think about life.

It exposes how misplaced our values are.

It confronts how delusional we can be.

And it points us in a direction that we probably wouldn't go in on our own.

So as we think about Lent and Christ's suffering and a sacrifice,
