In the surf world, there are a lot of characters who are just in the periphery, but are quietly influencing the way that you and I are experiencing

surfing.

You may not know their names.

Sanders and surfboard factories whose names you'll never see signed on the bottom of your

surfboard, but whose work directly affects the way that you ride waves?

Maybe it's a team manager who's cultivated in athletes' talent and organized a trip

that's generated a video clip that you're trying to emulate. John Roseman has arguably been

responsible for more surf world salivating than almost anyone by virtue of the fact that he is

stewarding one of the greatest waves on the planet

and has been for nearly as long as that wave has been surfed. Of course, that's not to say that

he does this alone, nor is this an appointed role, but everyone seems to co-sign John's role

as steward. From the recently dearly departed island

chief Druku to a visiting array of surfers to the islands of Fiji over the past three decades,

and it actually may not be fair for me to claim that Roseman's peripheral influence means

that he is nameless, because if you discovered surfing in the era of the surf magazines,

then you would know that John Roseman has scored more magazine photos than any other non-professional

surfer on the planet, maybe even more than some professional surfers. His photos were always

at cloudbreak, always on the wave of the day, always in red trunks, and often with his leash on his front foot, all things that we will discuss in today's chat.

And beyond the surf world, by the way, he also played Tom Hanks' stunt double in the movie Castaway.

I think we've all seen that.
