As you guys recall with the last episode, we talked about the fight at Colbes Farm on June 22, 1864.

We said that the next day, William Tecumseh Sherman, sent a message to Henry Halleck in Washington, reporting on the state of the campaign.

But by the time that message reached Washington the next afternoon,

the situation had already changed dramatically because Sherman had decided to order an attack.

You see, on the morning of June 24th, Sherman received a message from George Thomas

telling him that Sherman's plan to continually extend the federal lines in an

attempt to find a weakness in the Confederate position would no longer work.

That morning, George Thomas notified Sherman of his observations upon riding his lines.

Quote, I've been along the line this morning and find that the enemies entrenchments

in front of Howard and Palmer are very strong. The troops are also much fatigued in consequence

of the continuous operations of the last three or four days. Howard's and Palmer's fronts are now

them to mass a sufficient number of men to make an effective move on any point.

Sherman sent word acknowledging Thomas's report and for the first time indicated that he

planned on launching an assault against the Confederate lines

at Kennesaw Mountain. Sherman began by noting that, according to Schofield, 23rd Corps

couldn't move any farther south because the rebels had effectively countered that strategy,

meaning that moving around the Confederate left was no longer a viable
