1864, in the war's eastern theater, the Federal's Army of the Potomac and the Confederates Army of Northern Virginia

had squared off against each other in the Overland campaign, and the result was unprecedented

carnage. Throughout the month of May, the two armies had lost well over 50,000 men, which was nearly

the entire strength of the Confederate Army of

Tennessee in Georgia. And the fighting at Cold Harbor in early June only continued that pattern of

bloodshed. On June 3rd alone, more than 3,500 bedrills were lost in less than one hour during a massive assault against Confederate

lines. Those losses were heavy, but the Yankees were inching closer and closer to Richmond,
