Garret Kruger and Sabrina Ricci are the husband and wife team behind IKnowDino.com, which started as a side hustle and is now the world’s #1 dinosaur podcast. Not bad for a couple of non-paleontologists. It wasn’t an overnight success. In fact, it took 6 years for the two of them to feel comfortable going full-time in the business. But they’ve had a blast along the way and they’re doing what they love doing most - interviewing paleontologists, talking about dinosaurs, and building a passionate dino-loving community. Case in point, Garrett Kruger and Sabrina Ricci. This is the husband and wife team behind I know Dino, which started as a Silent Hustle and is now the world number one dinosaur podcast. Yes, this is a real thing. Not bad for a couple of non paleontologists.

And of course, all the different ways podcasts can make money. Once again, that's at Silent Hustle Nation dot com slash Dino. This story starts with Garrett and Sabrina rediscovering their childhood love of dinosaurs, visiting natural history museums while they were dating and then even having a dino themed wedding. Ready? Let's do it.

1:11.8

After the wedding, we didn't want to stop talking about dinosaurs. We decided to start a podcast. We saw that there were paleontology podcasts out there, but not necessarily focused on dinosaurs and we're in a gold the age of dinosaur discovery, this new discovery every week.

1:28.8

Yeah, so I was looking for a podcast that covered all the new dinosaur discoveries because like Sabrina said, there's one pretty much every week. So I figured there must be a weekly dinosaur podcast that's covering all of these and I couldn't find one anywhere.

1:41.8

And then I was talking to Sabrina about it and we decided like, well, I guess we could do it. We got to learn some things, but if we could probably pull it off.

1:51.8

There was definitely a learning curve. Yeah, it was great. We got to we started right away interviewing paleontologists and we found that people in the dinosaur community are really well, they're very passionate and enthusiastic about sharing their work. So they were happy to come on our show and answer all our questions. Yeah, yeah, it was great.

2:09.8

That was the beginning thesis. Well, there's all of this news that's coming out that's interesting to us and interesting to other people who are into dinosaurs.

2:17.8

There's not a great podcast source for this information. So I said, well, I guess we could do that. Okay. Yep. Yeah, that's what we did.

2:28.8

That's really cool. And by virtue of being the only people in town doing that, you're able to call up these paleontologists and say, can you speak to XYZ new discovery?

2:40.8

Sort of, there are still other really great paleontology podcasts out there, but they don't focus necessarily just on dinosaurs.

2:48.8

Yeah, I think the main reason the paleontologists were willing to talk to us is just because paleontologists in general really like talking about their work.

2:55.8

It's a pretty, it's actually a really competitive field that's sort of like, I don't know, not quite as bad as say acting or music or something where there's tons of people interested in it and they're willing to do it for free.

3:07.8

But it's close where I think something like only two out of every hundred people or maybe something like that end up getting a job specifically in like the field of paleontology, either teaching it or like digging up dinosaurs or working in a museum.

3:21.8

Most of them end up going into either like geology, exploring for architectural projects, you know, where you need to test the soil and things like that or for oil and gas exploration and things like that.

3:33.8

So you have to be very passionate about it and you need to be really good at it and have a lot of hustle in order to become one of these paleontologists that spends their life researching dinosaurs.

3:43.8

So most of them, because they're so passionate about it, are very happy to just get out there and talk about their work with anybody who will have them.

3:51.8

Makes it really fun to talk to them too.

3:53.8

For these existing paleontology shows, were there any hints or breadcrumbs of sponsorship money flowing in that direction?

4:02.8

Or was there any sense from you guys early on like, hey, you know, one day this could be a business.

4:07.8

I'm just curious like, or was it purely from the hobby standpoint?
