Hello everyone. Well I hope I didn't depress you too much last episode when I went on and on about the hydrogels,

but today we're going to bust some myths about watering in the garden.

So there are five that I'm going to talk about,

and you know, they're not necessarily myths

as they are oversimplifications or perhaps misunderstandings.

So the first one we're going to talk about is the one inch of water a week rule.

Well, it's just that. It's a rule and rules are meant to be broken. Rules are meant to be played within a specific range.

So plants vary widely in their water needs, of course, right? Succulents need less water than perhaps a water-hungry tomato plant, right?

Young seedlings, new transplants, they have limited root systems, they need a lot of

moisture because they just are babies, they need a lot of care, just like an adult has to care for a human baby, right?

These things need a lot of care early on in their life.

They might need daily watering or even twice daily watering when the weather is sunny and hot, especially because the

cells that you're growing the men are often quite small and smaller amounts of soil dry out

much quicker than larger amounts of soil.

Now, let's say you're growing something established,

a tree, a shrub, something that's roots

are well established in the soil.

They might not even need to be watered once a week.

They have extensive root systems that are able to seek out

water deep below the soil surface, sometimes six plus feet deep below.

It really depends on what you're growing. And so the type of

plant is really going to determine how much water your plant needs. So the goal here
