If you are navigating a friendship breakup, you're not alone, you're not a bad person, and you are

going to be okay. But I know it probably doesn't feel that way. Let's talk about it.

Sogum. Welcome back to SoulGum, the self-development podcast with philosophical, psychological,

0:18.5

and literary flair. I'm your host, Victoria Hutchins. My goal is to give

0:23.6

your soul something to chew on. And today, we are talking about friendship breakups. Friendship breakups

0:30.7

are the wild, wild west of interpersonal conflict. I think friendship breakups often are worse than romantic breakups. We know and

0:39.9

accept that when we date someone, there's a good chance we won't end up spending the rest of our

0:44.4

lives with them. But somehow we don't hold that same awareness when it comes to our friends.

1:19.1

breakup with a really long-term friend because we have language for it. I just got dumped. I just

1:25.5

went through a breakup. We don't have that with the ending of friendships.

1:29.2

You have read the script of how to get over a romantic heartbreak a thousand times. That doesn't

1:35.6

mean it's easy to do. It's not at all. But it's talked about a lot. In media and culture and

1:41.1

movies and books, we have heard that story. But there is no roadmap for getting over

1:47.5

a friendship breakup. So today, we're going to try to unravel that ball a little bit. I want to talk about

1:54.1

five different types of friendship breakups and how to get through them. And since this is SoulGum,

1:59.3

we will weave some philosophy and psychology

2:02.2

in as we go. Two quick things before we dive in. Number one, if you hear revving of engines,

2:07.5

you might know I'm in Bali, it's very loud here. Sorry about that. Number two, SoulGum hit 10,000
