Hello from CNN, I'm Afomadikay with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, December 5th.

The Israeli military says it's entering the third phase of its ground operations in Gaza in the war against Hamas.

The military says its forces are encircling on Yunus in southern Gaza.

Accounts there and a city farther north describe intensive Israeli strikes.

There is some indication that senior Hamas commanders

may be in that city.

And tonight, Hersi Hallevi, that chief of staff,

is saying that the address for the Israeli military

that it is targeting is Hamas and it is Yajya Sinwar, the group's leader as it moves forward

into southern Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army says one of its soldiers was killed in an Israeli attack for what appears to be the first time since hostilities began in October.

A House Committee questioned University presidents about

their efforts to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of hate on campuses today.

Republican Representative Virginia Fox invited the President of Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania,

and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to give testimony.

You have the courage to truly confront and condemn the ideology driving anti-Semitism?

Or will you offer weak blame shifting excuses

and yet another responsibility dodging task force.

All three presidents reiterated their commitments of fighting anti-Semitism

as well as incidents of Islamophobia.
