Hello from CNN, I'm Anna Sturlow with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, September 20th.

The Federal Reserve said today it's hitting the breaks on rate hikes while it reviews more data.

Since March of last year, the Fed has raised... on rate hikes while it reviews more data.

Since March of last year, the Fed has raised interest rates 11 times.

This is only the second time since then where they've hit pause.

We're prepared to raise rates further, if appropriate,

and we intend to hold policy at a restrictive level

until we're confident that inflation is moving down

sustainably toward our objective.

Markets made some gains earlier this afternoon but backed off when the Fed indicated

it could hike up rates once more before the end of the year, keeping rates

higher for longer than previously expected.

Attorney General Merrick Garland is in the hot seat on Capitol Hill today, taking

questions from lawmakers at a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

Our job is not to take orders from the President, from Congress, or from anyone else about who or what to criminally investigate.

As the president himself has said,

and I reaffirm today, I am not the president's lawyer.

I will add, I am not Congress's prosecutor. The Justice Department works for the

American people. Garland heads the Department of Justice which under his

leadership has faced accusations of political bias from Republicans in Congress.

Garland strongly pushed back against those allegations, along with claims that the DOJ investigation into the President's son, Hunter Biden was tainted by politics.
