Summary

In last night's Hurdle Session, we had a really special conversation about navigating life post-injury. I knew that I needed to share my sentiments on it on the feed. Injuries, and all of life's hurdles, are tough. They make us feel like we're not good enough, and it's hard to figure out the "right" way to move forward. Even harder (sometimes), when you're "back" to yourself, life and things that used to feel easy feel ... not. I've been there. I get it. I'm talking about the right way to move forward post-setback for today's 5-MINUTE FRIDAY.

Hey, hurdlers, Emily Abadi here, bringing you another installment of five-minute Friday.

0:24.7

This week, you know, I had another thought of what I wanted to chat about, but then I hosted

0:30.4

the hurdle session tonight on how to take your running to the next level. And at the end of it,

0:37.3

during the Q&A period, I had an

0:39.8

exchange that I wanted to share here on the feed because I think it's really important.

0:45.4

One of the woman in the session, she had a question about how to navigate injury. And she shared a little bit of her story. She said that

0:57.3

she has been going through a really rough time. And in the good old days, she used to be the kind

1:04.8

of person who could be as active as she wanted. She was running a ton, doing five Ks and marathons and half marathons and whatnot.

1:13.3

And this year has been a really big struggle for her because of, of course, I'm gesturing my

1:19.0

hands as if you can see them, everything that we've all been going through with the coronavirus

1:23.1

pandemic and political unrest and social unrest and so many things.

1:28.4

But also, because of that injury and because she hasn't been able to move her body as

1:33.6

she once could.

1:35.8

And she's in a place now where she's a bit better and wants to set new goals, but feels

1:41.1

absolutely paralyzed because the new goals that she is setting are

1:44.9

nothing like the old ones. And she feels trapped in her own body. And I paused and I heard this and

1:52.6

I could totally relate, not just on the fact that it's been a hard year, but I too have been on

1:57.8

the injured list and I have felt frustrated and unmotivated and angry.

2:03.4

And so I want to share the advice now that I shared with her and the rest of the people in the

2:08.8

hurdle session. I said, there's a few things that we can do here. First of all, before we get into it,

2:13.7

I want you to know that you are not alone. You are not alone at all in how you feel.

2:18.6

There are so many other people that feel this way, that feel stuck, that feel frustrated.
