Summary

I spent a better part of my day yesterday writing. But unlike most days, when I’m working on fitness content or offering up health tips, today’s words were mostly about my love for New York. Every day lately, it feels like someone new is telling me that they’re leaving this special place. Some permanently. Others just for now. New York has been one of the greatest loves of my life, and this week for 5-MINUTE FRIDAY I'm sharing why I'm not going anywhere, not yet.

PROMPT: If you could be anywhere with anyone, where would you be and with who?

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE
The New York City Marathon
Jay-Z’s MTV Unplugged album
New York or Nowhere Confetti Capsule Collection
Where to Begin by Cleo Wade
“How to Make Journaling Work for You” from Life Kit by NPR

Hey, Hurdlers, Emily Abadi bringing you five-minute Friday from Hurtle. It's been a week, huh? I feel like this week I was not really

0:28.1

productive at all. I mean, I feel like I'm in this holding pattern where I'm getting everything

0:32.9

done that I need to get done, but I'm not exceeding the status quo.

0:40.1

And I know that it's okay. And I have to have some grace with myself.

0:41.9

But it just, it feels a little bit, you know what I mean, that arg feeling.

0:49.9

That's how I feel.

0:51.4

Anyway, for five minute Friday this week, I'm talking about my great love,

0:56.3

New York City. You know, yesterday, a friend of mine, she reached out to me and she told me in a text

1:05.6

message that she was going to hopefully sublet her apartment at the end of July and move back to where she's from

1:13.9

in Portland. And I didn't really know how to respond. I mean, it's a conversation that I've heard

1:21.5

a lot lately, especially. I mean, since the beginning of the pandemic, so many of my friends,

1:27.3

you know, have been either

1:28.9

leaving the city temporarily or making the move out of the city possibly for good.

1:35.4

And it's been really interesting because their decisions have me asking myself what it is that I want.

1:43.8

And time and time again, when I come back to this question,

1:48.2

where do I want to be? I just, I think about New York in all of its glory. I think about the

1:55.9

magic that it has. I think about that here you can literally be whoever you want to be whenever you want to be

2:02.1

them. Even in a pandemic, I mean, let's reflect first on my pre-pandemic life, right? Like I could

2:08.4

literally go to a hot yoga class at Linesden and I could be there next to celebrities. I could take a

2:16.4

quick shower and then be at a rooftop bar in minutes

2:20.6

overlooking the Empire State Building like it was no thing. Just casual, right? I could go

2:27.4

bouldering in Central Park and run over one of three different bridges, I think, to Brooklyn,
